Castle of Stenico and Val d'Algone
Trentino > Car itineraries in Trentino
Take
the road to San Lorenzo in Banale as far as Villa Banale and here turn right for
Stenico whose castle, once the property of the Prince-Bishops of Trento, is well
worth a visit. In Stenico take the local road no. 34 towards Ragoli and after a
few kilometres turn right into the Algone Valley along a steep,
narrow and in parts unmetalled mountain road which takes you to the area of
the refuges (about 1,100 m. a.s.l.). Continuing along this unmetalled road and
subject to purchasing a permit available on-site, you come to the Malga Movlina
(1,746 m.) and from here on foot to the
Dodici Apostoli Refuge (2,489 m.). Back on the local road no. 34 turn right and
after a few hundred metres on the right is the turn-off for the old village of
Iron at the foot of Monte Iron. This is a village that was abandoned by its
inhabitants in the Middle Ages because of the plague.
Back
on the no. 34 road turn left for Stenico and then take the road to Seo (note the
interesting renovation of the Dologno pizzeria and restaurant) and carry on
towards Sclemo. In Tavolo, (church) at the cross-roads with main road no. 421,
turn left towards Dorsino, San Lorenzo in Banale and Molveno.
