The Lares Valley is a lateral valley south
of Val di Genova. The river Lares gives origins to beautiful waterfalls
that can be reached by a short walk from the Val Genova. Lake Lares is located
at over 2600 meters above sea level and is surrounded in the north by mount Crozzon del Diavol, in the west by mount Crozzon, the hanging glacier of Lares,
the Corno of Cavento and Mount Folletto. Further south there is the Carè Alto.
It's possible to reach Lake Lares from the Val di Genova, at Malga
Genoa: after the bridge over the river Sarca take trail 214 up through a steep
forest of larches (lares in dialect) to Malga Lares, (2 hr walk) m.1891. Here
southwards through the upper Val Lares to the homonymous mountain hut, follow
the River Lares south and then turn west
up to the former Lares Refuge (m.2085). A 90 min walk over meadows and then
detritic ground leads to the shores of the lake.
